Glossary for Achalasia

  • Achalasia - alacrimia syndrome: A rare disorder characterized by the association of achalasia (lack of peristaltic motion) and alacrimia (absent tears).
  • Achalasia, familial esophageal: A rare familial disorder where the esophagus lacks the normal peristaltic motions that help food move through the digestive system.
  • Acid reflux / heartburn:
  • Autonomic neuropathy: A disorder of the nervous system concerned with regulation of activity of cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands, usually restricted to the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
  • Cardiospasm: Failure of the lower oesophageal sphincter to relax, resulting in food build up in the upper oesophagus.
  • Chagas disease: A parasitic infection caused by the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by insect bites or blood transfusions. The disease primarily involves the heart and gastrointestinal system.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Esophagus Cancer: Cancer of the esophagus in the throat.
  • Esophagus diseases: Diseases affecting the esophagus
  • Fullness: Early feeling of fullness from eating
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Repeated reflux of stomach acid into the throat.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux: Is referred to as the reflux of contents of the duodenum and stomach into the oesophagus
  • Heartburn: Pain from stomach acid coming back up the esophagus
  • Kwashiorkor: A malnutrition state that is produced by severe protein deficiency
  • Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
  • Posterior column ataxia with retinitis pigmentosa: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by progressive ataxia and eye degeneration resulting in blindness by the third decade as well as muscle problems.
  • Regurgitation: The backflow of stomach contents and gas from stomach back into oesophagus or mouth
  • Respiratory infections: Any infection that occurs to the respiratory system
  • Shortness of breath: The feeling of being short of breath
  • Swallowing difficulty: Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
