Cure Research for Acute myeloid leukemia

Medical Research Breakthroughs and Acute myeloid leukemia

Sorafenib helps in certain leukemias: Sorafenib is a known drug used in the treatment of kidney and liver cancers. Researchers at Texas have found other uses of the drug as well. They have found that the drug is useful in certain specific mutations of Acute Myeloid Leukemia [ALL]. Leukemia is a form of blood cancer. ALL is due to cancer of white blood cells in the bone marrow. The drug has been found to be effective against acute myeloid leukemia cells that have internal tandem duplication (ITD) mutations of the Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) gene. In other words, in patients with FLT3 mutant leukemia cells on sorafenib, there was a reduction in the cancer cells in the blood as compared to patients without the drug.
