Article Excerpts about Alcohol abuse
Alcohol Abuse and Treatment: NWHIC (Excerpt)
Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disease. Alcoholism is a chronic, often progressive disease with symptoms that include a strong need to drink despite negative consequences, such as serious job, relationships, or health problems. Like many other diseases, it has a generally predictable course, has recognized symptoms, and is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors that are being increasingly well defined. (Source: excerpt from Alcohol Abuse and Treatment: NWHIC)
Alcohol What You Don't Know Can Harm You: NIAAA (Excerpt)
If you are like many Americans, you may drink alcohol occasionally. Or, like others, you may drink moderate amounts of alcohol on a more regular basis. If you are a woman or someone over the age of 65, this means that you have no more than one drink per day; if you are a man, this means that you have no more than two drinks per day. Drinking at these levels usually is not associated with health risks and can help to prevent certain forms of heart disease. (Source: excerpt from Alcohol What You Don't Know Can Harm You: NIAAA)
Alcoholism Getting the Facts: NIAAA (Excerpt)
Alcohol abuse differs from alcoholism in that it does not include an extremely strong craving for alcohol, loss of control over drinking, or physical dependence. Alcohol abuse is defined as a pattern of drinking that results in one or more of the following situations within a 12-month period (Source: excerpt from Alcoholism Getting the Facts: NIAAA)
Definitions of Alcohol abuse:
A class of compounds where a hydroxyl (OH) group is attached to single bonded hydrocarbons. Alcohols are classified according to the position of the carbon atom with the attached hydroxyl group (i.e. primary alcohols are alcohols with the OH group attached to the primary carbon atom, C1). Uses include solvents, astringents, and anti-infective activity.(NCI) - (Source - Diseases Database)
