Glossary for Allergic rhinitis

Acute rhinitis: An acute condition which affects the nasal mucous caused by inflammation
Allergic Disorders: A group of disorders that a caused by an allergic response to allergens
Allergic irritability syndrome: Symptoms such as irritability and poor concentration associated with nose, ear and sinus symptoms caused by allergies such as hayfever.
Allergies: Immune system over-reaction to various substances.
Asthmatic Bronchitis: A variant of asthma where cough, either chronic or during an exacerbation following a viral infection, is the main or only symptom
Atrophic rhinitis: Type of rhinitis caused by thinning nasal membranes
Breathing symptoms: Symptoms affecting the breathing systems.
Chemical poisoning - Barium: Barium is an element used in fireworks, glassmaking, contrast X-rays and in the electronics industry . The type and severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of chemical involved and the nature of the exposure.
Chronic cough: The chronic noisy sudden expulsion of air from the respiratory tract
Common cold: A cold is a relatively minor contagious infection of the nose and throat that can be caused by a number of different viruses (e.g. rhinoviruses, coronaviruses). There are over 200 different viruses that have the potential to cause the common cold. Although colds can cause discomfort they are not considered a serious condition.
Conjunctivitis: Contagious eye infection
Flu: Very common viral respiratory infection.
Hay fever: An allergy which causes sneezing, runny nose or blocked nose for part of the year.
Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
Nasal congestion: The congestion of the nasal passages.
Non-Food Allergy - Cockroach: A cockroach allergy is an adverse reaction by the body's immune system to cockroaches, in particular their saliva, outer shell, eggs and feces. The specific symptoms that can result can vary amongst patients.
Non-Food Allergy - dust mites: A mite allergy is an adverse reaction by the body's immune system to dust mites. The body's immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE - an antibody) and histamine in response to contact with the allergen. The specific symptoms that can result can vary amongst patients.

Nosebleeds: The discharge of blood from the nose
Perennial rhinitis: A condition which is characterized by a constant inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane
Rhinitis: Nasal lining inflammation leading to runny/blocked nose
Seasonal allergic rhinitis: A condition characterized by an allergic inflammatory response in the mucosa of the sinuses which is related to the seasons
Sinusitis: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
Type I Hypersensitivity: Type I hypersensitivity is an exaggerated response by the body's immune system to an allergen which results in some sort of adverse effect on the body. Allergens usually in the form of proteins such as pollen, foods, house dust mite and cat hair. This form of hypersensitivity results in an immediate response by the immune system following exposure.
