Glossary for Alpha 1-Antitrypsin Deficiency

  • Autoimmune Hepatitis: Liver inflammation caused due to autoimmune processes where the body's immune system attacks the liver.
  • Cirrhosis of liver: Chronic liver disease wherein normal liver parenchyma is replaced by fibrous tissue.
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine (mucus) glands of the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability due to multisystem failure.
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Hepatocellular jaundice: A condition which is characterized by jaundice due to injury or damage to the hepatocellular cells of the liver
  • Neonatal Jaundice: Common skin yellowing jaundice in newborn babies.
  • Panacinar Emphysema: Panacinary (or panlobular) emphysema is related to the destruction of alveoli, because of an inflammation or deficiency of alpha 1-antitrypsin
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas causing digestive complaints.
  • Pneumothorax: Air in the pleural spaces around the lungs.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease of unknown etiology that is recognized increasingly in children.
  • Rales: are the clicking, rattling, or crackling noises heard on auscultation of the lung caused by the"popping open" of small airways and alveoli collapsed by fluid, exudate, or lack of aeration during expiration
  • Rhonchi: A coarse rattling sound resonating from the lungs
  • Shortness of breath: The feeling of being short of breath
  • Smoking: The smoking of cigarettes
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
  • Wheezing: A whistling like continuous sound that is caused by the respiratory system
