Glossary for Alternating Hemiplegia

  • Alternating hemiplegia of childhood: A rare neurological disorder involving paralysis on one side of the body that is only temporary but occurs often. The extent of the paralysis is variable.
  • Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain
  • Cognitive impairment: General loss of mental or cognitive ability
  • Dizziness: Feelings of lightheadedness or giddiness.
  • Facial paralysis: A usually temporary facial nerve disorder where a part or all of the face becomes suddenly paralysed.
  • Hemiparesis: One-sided paralysis of the body
  • Hemiplegia: Paralysis of one side of the body.
  • Medial Medullary Syndrome: A rare condition caused by a blood clot or other trauma in the brainstem. The resulting symptoms affect the side of the body opposite to the site of the lesion.
  • Migraine: Chronic recurring headaches with or without a preceding aura.
  • Paralysis symptoms: Loss of body control and/or feeling.
  • Walking symptoms: Problems with walking.
