Article Excerpts about Alveolar Hydatid Disease

AHD (al-VEE-oh-ler HIGH-dad-id) disease results from being infected with the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, a microscopic tapeworm (1-4 millimeters) found in foxes, coyotes, dogs, and cats. Although human cases are rare, infection in humans causes parasitic tumors to form in the liver, and, less commonly, the lungs, brain, and other organs. (Source: excerpt from Alveolar Hydatid Disease: DPD)

Definitions of Alveolar Hydatid Disease:

A north temperate species of tapeworm (CESTODA) whose adult form infects FOXES and wild RODENTS. The larval form can infect humans producing HEPATIC HYDATID CYSTS. - (Source - Diseases Database)

Alveolar Hydatid Disease is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Alveolar Hydatid Disease, or a subtype of Alveolar Hydatid Disease, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
