Glossary for Amnesia

  • AIDS: A term given to HIV patients who have a low CD4 count (below 200) which means that they have low levels of a type of immune cell called T-cells. AIDS patients tend to develop opportunistic infections and cancers. Opportunistic infections are infections that would not normally affect a person with a healthy immune system. The HIV virus is a virus that attacks the body's immune system.
  • Acute Pesticide poisoning - xylene: Xylene is an ingredient used in certain insecticides. Exposure to the chemical can cause a range of symptoms depending on the level and route of exposure. Exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, the skin or eyes. Acute exposure involves a exposure over a short period of time whereas chronic exposure occurs over a longer period of time.
  • Aganglionosis, total intestinal: A developmental defect of the intestinal tract where the muscles of the intestines are unable to function and move food along the digestive tract. This form of Hirschsprung disease is differentiated from the other types by the location of the genetic defect.
  • Alcohol abuse: Excessive use of alcohol ranging from binge drinking to severe alcoholism
  • Alcohol-Induced Disorders: Disorders caused by excessive alcohol consumption. The symptoms are variable depending on the disorder involved. Some of the disorders are: alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol intoxication, alcohol withdrawal, alcohol intoxication delirium, alcohol withdrawal delirium, alcohol-induced persisting dementia, alcohol-induced persisting amnestic disorder, alcohol-induced psychotic disorder, alcohol-induced mood disorder, alcohol-induced anxiety disorder, alcohol-induced sexual dysfunction, alcohol-induced sleep disorder, liver damage, liver cancer and esophageal cancer.
  • Alcoholic Neuropathy: Neurological changes due to nerve damage from long-term alcohol consumption
  • Alzheimer's Disease: Dementia-causing brain disease mostly in seniors and the elderly.
  • Alzheimer's disease: Dementia-causing brain disease mostly in seniors and the elderly.
  • Amnesic shellfish poisoning: Rare shellfish poisoning sometimes causing amnesia.
  • Amnestic disorder: Memory decline disorder
  • Anoxia: Lack of oxygen to the body's tissues.
  • Brain cancer: Cancer of the brain.
  • Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain
  • Brain infection: Infection of the brain including encephalitis
  • Cerebral Aneurysm: Dangerous swelling of a brain blood vessel that may rupture.
  • Chemical poisoning: Morbid condition caused by chemical.
  • Chemical poisoning - Glufosinate: Glufosinate is a chemical used mainly in herbicides. Ingestion and other exposures to the chemical can cause various symptoms. The type and severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of chemical involved and the nature of the exposure.
  • Chronic Alcoholism - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that chronic alcoholism during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Concussion: Brain injury causing loss of consciousness and bruising of the brain
  • Dementia: Various mental impairment conditions.
  • Diencephalic syndrome of infancy: A rare syndrome usually caused by a brain tumor located near the hypothalamus and results in symptoms such as low blood sugar, pale skin and loss of skin fat and failure to thrive.
  • Dissociative Amnesia: The sudden loss of memory
  • Dissociative Fugue: A condition characterized by sudden departure from normal residence with no memory of the past associated with confusion
  • Electrical burns: Burns caused when an electric current pass through the body or part of it. The symptoms and severity of the burn depends on the strength of the electrical current, the duration of the exposure and the part of the body involved. Prompt treatment in more severe cases can improve the prognosis.
  • Electrocution: Any injury caused by electricity
  • Encephalitis: Dangerous infection of the brain
  • Epilepsy: Brain condition causing seizures or spasms.
  • Forgetfulness: Forgetting things or loss of memory ability
  • Hashimoto's encephalitis: A rare form of brain disease and inflammation.
  • Head injury: An injury to the head
  • Homen syndrome: Lesion on a part of the brain called the lenticular nucleus which is involved in movement.
  • Hysteria: Psychological disorder causing physical symptoms
  • Korsakoff's psychosis: Brain condition with progressive memory loss
  • Memory loss: The loss of ones ability to recall from their memory.
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Mental illness: Any psychological syndrome
  • Migraine: Chronic recurring headaches with or without a preceding aura.
  • Nutritional deficiency: Any deficiency of the nutrients that are required to sustain human life
  • Stroke: Serious brain event from bleeding or blood clots.
  • Temporary memory loss: The temporary occurrence of memory loss
  • Transient global amnesia: Sudden, short-term memory loss
  • Traumatic Brain Injury: Brain injury from trauma or accident.
  • Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome: A rare degenerative brain disorder caused by thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency. Chronic alcoholics are prone to this condition.
