Article Excerpts about Anencephaly

NINDS Anencephaly Information Page: NINDS (Excerpt)

Anencephaly is a neural tube defect (a disorder involving incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord, and/or their protective coverings). The neural tube is a narrow sheath that folds and closes between the 3rd and 4th weeks of pregnancy to form the brain and spinal cord of the embryo. (Source: excerpt from NINDS Anencephaly Information Page: NINDS)

Folic Acid: NWHIC (Excerpt)

Babies with anencephaly do not develop a brain or only develop a partial brain. These babies die either before birth or shortly afterwards. (Source: excerpt from Folic Acid: NWHIC)

Definitions of Anencephaly:

A malformation of the nervous system caused by failure of the anterior neuropore to close. Infants are born with intact spinal cords, cerebellums, and brainstems, but lack formation of neural structures above this level. The skull is only partially formed but the eyes are usually normal. This condition may be associated with folate deficiency. Affected infants are only capable of primitive (brain stem) reflexes and usually do not survive for more than two weeks. (From Menkes, Textbook of Child Neurology, 5th ed, p247) - (Source - Diseases Database)

A defect in brain development resulting in small or missing brain hemispheres - (Source - WordNet 2.1)

Anencephaly is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Anencephaly, or a subtype of Anencephaly, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Anencephaly as a "rare disease".
