Glossary for Ankylosing Spondylitis

  • Adolescent conditions: Symptoms that are evident due to puberty
  • Alkaptonuria: A rare disorder where the abnormal accumulation of a particular acid (homogentisic acid) in the body causes connective tissue and bone damage. This damage gives tissues a dark or bluish discoloration.
  • Angelman syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by a puppet-like gait, fits of laughter and characteristic facial features.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis: Inflammation of spinal joints similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Aortic Aneurysm, Thoracic: Bulging and weakness of the aorta in the area of the chest. The condition is life-threatening as death can occur rapidly if the aneurysm bursts.
  • Aortic valve incompetence: A condition characterized by an inability of the aortic valve to function effectively
  • Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Cauda equina syndrome: Is a neurological syndrome which occurs when a vertebral disc protrudes and compresses the spinal cord.
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Enthesopathy: A disease process occurring at locations where tendons and ligaments attach to bone.
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Hyperparathyroidism: Increased secretion of parathyroid hormone from the parathyroid glands.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Any type of digestive condition caused by bowel inflammation.
  • Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis: Chronic arthritis affecting children and teens
  • Lower back pain: Pain in the lower back region
  • Marfan syndrome: A genetic connective tissue disorder involving a defect of chromosome 15q21.1 which affects the production of the fibrillin needed to make connective tissue.
  • Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterised by mechanical disrturbances due to degradation of joints. It is the most common form of arthritis, and the leading cause of chronic disability.
  • Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis: Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the skin (psoriasis) and joints (arthritis). Psoriatic arthritis is said to be a seronegative spondyloarthropathy and therefore occurs more commonly in patients with tissue type HLA-B27.
  • Reactive arthritis: The inflammation of a joint
  • Reiter’s syndrome: A form of reactive arthritis characterized by arthritis, urethritis, conjunctivitis and skin lesions.
  • Rheumatic conditions: Any condition that affects ones joints
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Autoimmune form of arthritis usually in teens or young adults.
  • Sciatica: Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself.
  • Seronegative Arthritis: Classification given to the group of joint conditions with similar features to rheumatoid arthritis, but affecting different joints and lacking the specific autoantibodies used to identify rheumatoid arthritis
  • Seronegative spondyloarthropathy: Spondyloarthropathy that is negative to rheumatoid facotr
  • Spinal conditions: Any condition that affects the spine
  • Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal cavity around the spinal cord.
  • Spine symptoms: Symptoms affecting the spine
  • Spondylitis: Inflammation of one or multiple bony vertebrae of the spine
  • Stiff back: Reduced mobility or movement of the back
  • Ulcerative colitis: Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.
  • Uveitis: A condition which is characterised by the inflammation of the uvea of the eye
