What is Aplastic anemia?

What is Aplastic anemia?

  • Aplastic anemia: A blood disorder where the bone marrow produces insufficient new blood cells.
  • Aplastic anemia: Anemia resulting from bone marrow failure (aplastic or hypoplastic bone marrow). The production of erythroblasts and red cells is markedly decreased, and it may be associated with decreased production of granulocytes (granulocytopenia) and platelets (thrombocytopenia) as well. Aplastic anemia may be idiopathic or secondary due to bone marrow damage by toxins, radiation, or immunologic factors. -- 2004

  • Aplastic anemia: anemia characterized by pancytopenia resulting from failure of the bone marrow; can be caused by neoplasm or by toxic exposure.

Aplastic anemia is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Aplastic anemia, or a subtype of Aplastic anemia, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Aplastic anemia as a "rare disease".
