What is Arnold-Chiari malformation type 2?

What is Arnold-Chiari malformation type 2?

  • Arnold-Chiari malformation type 2: A rare malformation where the base of the brain enters into the upper spinal canal. The extent of the deformity is greater in type 2 than type 1 and hence the symptoms are more severe and are often associated with a myelomeningocele (opening of the spine and spinal cord).

Arnold-Chiari malformation type 2 is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Arnold-Chiari malformation type 2, or a subtype of Arnold-Chiari malformation type 2, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
