Arthralgia Diagnosis: Book Excerpts

Arthralgia: Undiagnosed Conditions

Commonly undiagnosed conditions in related areas may include:

Common Misdiagnoses and Arthralgia

Vitamin B12 deficiency under-diagnosed: The condition of Vitamin B12 deficiency is a possible misdiagnosis of various conditions, such as multiple sclerosis (see symptoms of multiple sclerosis). See symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency or misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Brucellosis can be identified on blood culture: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease which has diminished in its prevalence. It is caused by gram negative coccobacilli bacteria of the genus Brucella. Due to its non- specific presentation and varied complications in humans the differential diagnosis is vast. Some of the conditions which must be ruled out include salmonellosis, chlamydiosis, camplyobacteriosis, Q fever and many other viral diseases. Definitive diagnosis can only be made when brucellae are recovered from the infected tissues, like blood and bone marrow.

Cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis non specific presentation: Cryptogenic fibrosing alveoloitis is a chronic lung disease occurring due to the inflammation of the alveoli. The aetiology and pathogenesis are not known. The commonest symptoms are shortness of breath and dry cough. Extra pulmonary features such as muscle pain, arthralgia and skin rashes may also occur. Due to its non specific nature of presentation it maybe misdiagnosed as heart failure, COPD, sarcoidosis, pulmonary embolism, lymphangitis carcinomatosis and extrinsic allergic alveoloitis.
