Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: Introduction
Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is characterized by an abnormal immune system response which leads to the destruction of red blood cells and hence anemia. The severity of the condition varies depending on the underlying cause e.g. cytomegalovirus, hepatitis, HIV and lupus. The condition may develop gradually or occur suddenly and cause serious symptoms.

Treatments for Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia
- Varies depending on the underlying cause and severity of the conditions. Corticosteroids and other drugs may be required in some cases. Blood transfusions and even surgical removal of the spleen may be carried out in severe cases
- Identification and management of precipitating causes eg medication, infection
- Corticosteroids
- Folic acid - as active haemolysis consumes folate
- Blood transfusion - avoid unless absolutely necessary ie angina or cardiac decompensation. Patients with AIHA are usually difficult to crossmatch
