Glossary for Autoimmune Myocarditis

  • Angina: A special type of chest pain.
  • Aortic dissection: A tear in the inner layer of the aorta (major artery in the body) which allows blood to escape into outer layers of the artery.
  • Aortic stenosis: A condition which affects the aortic valve of the heart resulting in stenosis of the valve.
  • Arrhythmias: Irregularity in the heart's beating rhythm.
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Breathing difficulties: Various types of breathing difficulty (dyspnea).
  • Cardiac tamponade: Symptoms caused by compression of the heart due to the accumulation of blood or fluid in the space between the heart muscle and the membrane covering the heart.
  • Chest discomfort: The sensation of discomfort that is located in the chest
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
  • Cyanosis: Blueness or purple coloring of skin.
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Heart conditions: Any condition that affects the heart
  • Mitral-valve prolapse: A common heart condition that is often harmless.
  • Pericarditis: Inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart
  • Pulmonary embolus: Blood clot lodges in the arteries supplying the lungs, causing decreased blood flow and air exchange
