Introduction: Autoimmune thyroid diseases

The thyroid gland can be attacked by several different autoimmune diseases. The most common are Graves' disease (a form of hyperthyroidism or excessive thyroid hormone) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (a form of hypothyroidism with deficient thyroid hormone).
