Typically, uveitis is idiopathic. However, it can result from allergy, bacteria, viruses, fungi, chemicals, trauma, or surgery; or it may be associated with systemic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and toxoplasmosis.
Uveitis occurs in 15 of every 100,000 people.

The term 'prevalence' of Autoimmune uveitis usually refers to the estimated population
of people who are managing Autoimmune uveitis at any given time.
The term 'incidence' of Autoimmune uveitis refers to the annual diagnosis rate,
or the number of new cases of Autoimmune uveitis diagnosed each year.
Hence, these two statistics types can differ:
a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence,
but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence.
