Prevalence and Incidence of Babesiosis

Babesiosis: Rare Disease

Babesiosis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Babesiosis, or a subtype of Babesiosis, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, who are a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when if affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Babesiosis as a "rare disease". More information about Babesiosis is available from Orphanet

Babesiosis: Babesiosis - epidemiology
(The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)

  • The 1st human case in the US was reported from California in 1966.
  • Transmission usually occurs in the summer and early fall.
  • In the US, most cases have been reported from the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Coast.
    • Endemic areas include Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York.
    • Cases have been reported in New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Babesiosis - incidence

There were >450 confirmed cases of human babesiosis diagnosed in the US between 1968 and 1993.

Babesiosis - prevalence

Difficult to ascertain because asymptomatic infection appears to be common in endemic areas.

  • It has been reported, for instance, that seroprevalence is as high as 9% in some endemic areas of Rhode Island.

About prevalence and incidence statistics:

The term 'prevalence' of Babesiosis usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Babesiosis at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Babesiosis refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Babesiosis diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.
