Glossary for Batten Disease

  • Behavioral symptoms: Symptoms of personal behavior.
  • Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
  • Ceroid lipofuscinosis, neuronal 3, Juvenile: A progressive genetic disorder where defective lipid metabolism that causes blindness, neurological deterioration, dementia leading to total incapication within years and death within 10-15 years.
  • Clumsiness: Clumsy motions or poor coordination
  • Cognitive impairment: General loss of mental or cognitive ability
  • Coordination problems: Symptoms affecting physical coordination.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Dementia: Various mental impairment conditions.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Kyphosis: Outward curvature of the spine at the back causing hunching or Dowager's hump
  • Learning disabilities: Various developmental problems impairing learning or schooling.
  • Movement symptoms: Changes to movement or motor abilities
  • Optic atrophy: Dysfunction of the optic nerve which results in impaired vision. The disorder may be congenital or acquired. The rate and degree of atrophy is greatly variable depending on the cause.
  • Personality change: Change in a person's behavior and personality
  • Scoliosis: Sideways curvature of the spine
  • Seizures: A rare syndrome characterized by mental retardation, seizures and high levels of hydroxylysine in the urine.
