Glossary for Bedsores

Amyloidosis: A rare group of metabolic disorders where a protein called amyloid accumulates in body organs and tissues where it can cause damage and is potentially fatal. Symptoms depend on the organs involved. There are numerous forms of the condition: primary amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis, hemodialysis-associated amyloidosis and familial amyloidosis.
Deficiency-induced osteoporosis: Bone loss has been linked to minerals, drugs and endocrine disorders and hence the term deficiency induced osteoporosis is a very generalised broad term which links together minerals, drugs and other diseases induced osteoporosis.
Drug-induced osteoporosis: Drug induced osteoporosis is both preventable and treatable.
Gangrene: Tissue death
Hematoma: Local collection of clotted blood
Herpes: Virus with one subtype causing cold sores and another causing genital herpes.
Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
Pyoderma Gangrenosum: A rare inflammatory skin disorder characterized by small red bumps or blisters which eventually become ulcerated.
Quadriplegia: A condition where the patient becomes fully or partially paralysed from the neck down and is unable to move their arms or legs.
Sepsis: The presence of pathological micro-organisms in the blood
Seroma: An accumulation of fluid under a sutured wound following surgery.
Skin Cancer: Cancer of the skin; the most common type of cancer.
Skin redness: The occurrence of redness that is located in the skin
Skin symptoms: Symptoms affecting the skin.
Sores: Sores affecting the skin.
Spinal cord injury: Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord as a result of a direct trauma to the spinal cord itself or as a result of indirect damage to the bones and soft tissues and vessels surrounding the spinal cord.
Ulcer: A local defect in the mucosa
