Glossary for Birth Injury

  • Blood loss: loss of blood can occur through any of the body orifices
  • Brachial Plexus Injury: Damage to the nerves controlling the shoulder and arm (often from childbirth).
  • Deafness: Inability to hear sounds.
  • Dystonias: Muscle problems causing movement disorders
  • Erb's Palsy: Paralysis of the arm or hand often related to childbirth injury (also Brachial plexus palsy).
  • Rapid heart beat: Excessively fast heart beat (fast pulse) called "tachycardia"
  • Sepsis: The presence of pathological micro-organisms in the blood
  • Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
