Failure to diagnose Bone cancer may be associated with the following:
- Bone cancer is often undiagnosed in the early stages as there are usually no symptoms and symptoms that do occur (pain or bone lump) may be dismissed as harmless. Also, bone cancer has no symptoms that are specific for it
- The early signs of bone cancers in children often remain undiagnosed if the child fails to bring attention to them or if the parent fails to take the symptom seriously. Bone cancers can occur in children as well as adults with Ewing's sarcoma commonly occurring between the ages of 10 and 20 and osteosarcomas occurring most commonly between the ages of 10 and 25
- Bone cancer is considered quite rare and health professionals are therefore less likely to include it as a differential diagnosis
- Exposure to radioactive material such as radium and strontium increase the risk of bone cancer
- Patients who have had bone marrow transplants and radiotherapy and chemotherapy may also increase the risk of bone cancer
- Undiagnosed bone cancer can lead to bone weakening and fractures
Notes On Hidden Causes Of Bone cancer
The following may be hidden causes of Bone cancer:
- Patients with Paget's disease of the bone may have an increased risk of developing osteosarcoma
- Hereditary conditions associated with an increased risk of developing cancers, including bone cancer, are Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, hereditary retinoblastoma and multiple exostoses
- Exposure to heavy doses of radiation has been implicated with bone cancer risk
- Children with a congenital umbilical hernia have an increased risk of Ewing's sarcoma
- There is disagreement over findings that children of parents who worked in a farm-related job during conception and pregnancy were more likely to develop Ewing's sarcoma
Complications Of Misdiagnosis Of Bone cancer
The following may be complications of misdiagnosis of Bone cancer:
- Joint swelling or pain caused by a bone cancer near the joint may be misdiagnosed as joint inflammation due to injury or some other inflammatory disorder
- Fatigue, fever and weight loss may be misdiagnosed as an infectious disease - especially in children.
- Bone pain is often overlooked as being caused by an injury, sprain or arthritis. Bone pain in children is sometimes dismissed simply as growing pains
- Neurological symptoms caused by a spinal cancer compressing the spinal cord may be misdiagnosed as a nerve problem

- The primary cancers most often associated with metastatic bone cancer are breast, lung and prostate cancer
- Injury to the bone is considered extremely unlikely to cause bone cancer. However, bone cancer may make bones softer which makes them more likely to be affected by injury and the subsequent discovery of bone cancer
- In some cases, secondary bone cancer impairs bone marrow function and results in anemia, increased risk of infection, easy bruising and a bleeding tendency
