Bovine spongiform encephalopathy
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy: Introduction
One of the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies
caused by prions (abnormal proteins)
attacking the brain.
More commonly known as "mad cow disease", this disease became
famous because of an epidemic in British cows (and also parts of Europe).
The disease affects cows but not humans.
However, there are concerns that BSE may cause
variant CJD in humans,
though the link remains a subject of debate.

Definitions of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy:
A transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of cattle associated with abnormal prion proteins in the brain. Affected animals develop excitability and salivation followed by ATAXIA. This disorder has been associated with consumption of SCRAPIE infected ruminant derived protein. This condition may be transmitted to humans, where it is referred to as variant or new variant CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB SYNDROME. (Vet Rec 1998 Jul 25;143(41):101-5)
