Article Excerpts about Brown-Sequard Syndrome

Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by a lesion on the spinal cord which results in weakness or paralysis (hemiparaplegia) on one side of the body and a loss of sensation (hemianesthesia) on the opposite side. (Source: excerpt from NINDS Brown-Sequard Syndrome Information Page: NINDS)

Definitions of Brown-Sequard Syndrome:

A syndrome associated with injury to the lateral half of the spinal cord. The condition is characterized by the following clinical features (which are found below the level of the lesion): contralateral hemisensory anesthesia to pain and temperature, ipsilateral loss of propioception, and ipsilateral motor paralysis. Tactile sensation is generally spared. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p162). - (Source - Diseases Database)

Brown-Sequard Syndrome is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Brown-Sequard Syndrome, or a subtype of Brown-Sequard Syndrome, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
