Wrongly Diagnosed with Brucellosis?
Misdiagnosis and Brucellosis
Brucellosis can be identified on blood culture: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease which has diminished in its prevalence. It is caused by gram negative coccobacilli bacteria of the genus Brucella. Due to its non- specific presentation and varied complications in humans the differential diagnosis is vast. Some of the conditions which must be ruled out include salmonellosis, chlamydiosis, camplyobacteriosis, Q fever and many other viral diseases. Definitive diagnosis can only be made when brucellae are recovered from the infected tissues, like blood and bone marrow....read more »

Article Excerpts about Brucellosis
Brucellosis General: DBMD (Excerpt)
Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria of the genus Brucella. These bacteria are primarily passed among animals, and they cause disease in many different vertebrates. Various Brucella species affect sheep, goats, cattle, deer, elk, pigs, dogs, and several other animals. Humans become infected by coming in contact with animals or animal products that are contaminated with these bacteria. In humans brucellosis can cause a range of symptoms that are similar to the flu and may include fever, sweats, headaches, back pains, and physical weakness. Sever infections of the central nervous systems or lining of the heart may occur. Brucellosis cab also cause long-lasting or chronic symptoms that include recurrent fevers, joint pain, and fatigue. Facts About Brucellosis: CDC-OC (Excerpt)
Brucellosis, also known as "undulant fever" or "Bangs disease" is a systemic infection. There are several strains of brucellosis and, more recently, types infecting marine mammals have been identified. (Source: excerpt from Facts About Brucellosis: CDC-OC)
Definitions of Brucellosis:
Infection caused by bacteria of the genus BRUCELLA mainly involving the reticuloendothelial system. This condition is characterized by fever, weakness, malaise, and weight loss. - (Source - Diseases Database)
Infectious bacterial disease of human beings transmitted by contact with infected animals or infected meat or milk products; characterized by fever and headache - (Source - WordNet 2.1)
Brucellosis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Brucellosis, or a subtype of Brucellosis,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners,
currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000.
They list Brucellosis as a "rare disease".
