Burnett's syndrome: Introduction

Burnett's syndrome: Burnett's syndrome is a condition where the body is too alkaline and the blood contains too much calcium which results in impaired kidney function. It can be caused by drinking large quantities of milk or using too many alkaline antacid remedies. High vitamin D intake can make the condition worse. The people most at risk of this condition tend to be older people (especially women) who are taking calcium supplements as well as calcium carbonate containing remedies to treat dyspepsia. More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Burnett's syndrome is available below.

  • Treatment involves ceasing or reducing intake of calcium from all sources until the condition is remedied - this may involve a low calcium, low phosphorus diet. Severe cases require hospital admission to increase the fluid volume of the blood and reduce the calcium content through urinary excretion. Kidney dialysis may be needed if kidney complications have set in.
