Glossary for Cat scratch disease

  • Animal bite: The physical bite from any animal
  • Azithromycin - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to Azithromycin during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Bartonellosis: An infectious disease caused by Bartonella bacilliforms and transmitted by sandflies. It causes fever, anemia and a skin rash.
  • Cat bite: Bite from a cat.
  • Clarithromycin - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Clarithromycin (an antibiotic) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus.   • Gentamicin - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Gentamicin (an antibiotic) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus.   • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hodgkin's Disease: A form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
  • Kikuchi disease: A rare lymph node disorder which is not cancerous but causes large, inflamed lymph nodes.
  • Lyme disease: Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia.
  • Lymphangitis: Inflammation of the lymphatic channels caused by an infectious agent.
  • Lymphoma: Cancer involving lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Mild fever: The occurance of a fever but in a mild form
  • Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A type of lymphoma, a cancer affecting lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Optic nerve disorder: Any condition which impairs the function of the optic nerve. Examples of such conditions includes glaucoma, optic nerve inflammation and impaired blood supply to the optic nerve.
  • Optic neuritis: Optic nerve inflammation
  • Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
  • Skin symptoms: Symptoms affecting the skin.
  • Swollen lymph nodes: Swelling or enlargement of the lymph nodes
  • Toxoplasmosis: Infection often caught from cats and their feces.
  • Tularemia: A rare infections disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis (a gram-negative pleomorphic coccobacillus). Transmission occurs through contact with infected animals or there habitats e.g. bites from infected insects or other animals, eating infected wild animals, contact with contaminated water and soil. Symptoms can vary greatly depending on the method of infection. For example infection through inhalation can cause symptoms similar to pneumonia, eating infected animals can cause a sore throat and abdominal symptoms and transmission through the skin can cause result in a painful skin ulcer.
  • Uveitis: A condition which is characterised by the inflammation of the uvea of the eye
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
  • Zoonotic Diseases: When a condition is transmitted through a zoonotic organisms
