Glossary for Cellulitis

  • Adenitis: Inflammation of a lymph gland
  • Animal bite: The physical bite from any animal
  • Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
  • Blisters: Blistering of the skin.
  • Candidiasis: Fungal infection of moist areas such as mouth or vagina
  • Cephalexin - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Cephalexin (an antibiotic) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Chediak-Higashi Syndrome: A rare genetic disorder where both parents need to be carriers for it to be passed on. Sufferers have reduced skin pigmentation to the point of albinism in some cases. Characteristic white cell abnormalities increase bleeding problems and increase the risk of infections.
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Contact dermatitis: Skin reaction to an irritant
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clot in vein, often in calf muscle vein in the leg.
  • Diabetes: Failing or reduced ability of the body to handle sugars.
  • Eczema: Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by skin inflammation and irritation. The severity of extent of the condition is highly variable. It may be caused by allergies, irritants or other factors such as stress.
  • Edema: Fluid retention in tissues
  • Elderly conditions: Any of the conditions affecting the elderly.
  • Erysipelas: A severe streptococcal bacterial infection where infection spreads from the skin to tissue underneath. The face and extremities are the usual sites affected.
  • Erythema: A condition which is characterized by redness of the skin due to congestion of the capillaries
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Gas gangrene: A condition characterized by death of tissue usually followed by bacterial invasion and putrefaction
  • Gout: Painful joints, most commonly the big toe.
  • Gravitational eczema: Gravitational eczema is a chronic skin condition that affects the lower legs and is caused by problems with the veins in the legs e.g. blood clots or varicose veins.
  • Group A Streptococcal Infections: "Strep" bacteria responsible for strep throat, impetigo and some other strep conditions.
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • Hemophilus influenzae B: Bacterial respiratory infection with dangerous complications.
  • Intertrigo: Skin inflammation from rubbing together of two skin areas
  • Invasive group A Streptococcal disease: Infection with Group A Streptococcal bacteria
  • Lyme disease: Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia.
  • Lymphadenitis: The inflammation of the one or several lymph nodes
  • Lymphangitis: Inflammation of the lymphatic channels caused by an infectious agent.
  • Lymphedema: Swelling causes by lymphatic fluid retention
  • Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
  • Necrotizing fasciitis: A severe, progressive skin infection which causes progressive destruction of skin and underlying tissue. It is caused by certain bacteria and has a high mortality rate.
  • Nocardiosis: A rare infectious disease caused by the bacteria Nocardia asteroides which primarily affects the lung but may also involve the brain, soft tissues and other organs.
  • Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
  • Pasteurella multocida: An infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Pasteurella multocida. It is often transmitted through bites and scratches from pets and it can be found in mammals and fowl.
  • Periorbital Cellulitis: Bacterial infection of the superficial tissues surrounding the eyes, often following a conjunctivitis or middle ear infection
  • Podagra: A condition which is characterized by a gout like pain in the toe
  • Rectractile mesenteritis: A disorder involving the tissue that connects the small intestine to the back of the back of the abdominal wall (mesentery) and is characterized by infection and inflammation followed by fibrosis.
  • Red skin: The occurrence of red skin
  • Rocephin - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Rocephin (an antibiotic) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus.   • Scarlet fever: A complication of infection from strep bacteria such as strep throat.
  • Septicemia: A systemic inflammatory response to an infection.
  • Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
  • Skin pain: Pain affecting the skin.
  • Streptococcal Infections: Various "strep" bacterial infections.
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of a vein wall
  • Swollen lymph nodes: Swelling or enlargement of the lymph nodes
  • Swollen skin: It is caused by build up of fluid in the interstial tissues
  • Venous Insufficiency: A condition where the valves in the leg veins are unable to pump blood to the heart which causes blood to pool below the defective valves.
  • WHIM syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized by warts, hypogammaglobulinemia (low blood gammaglobulin levels), recurring bacterial infections and myelokathexis (form of neutropenia). It is a form of immunodeficiency disease caused by a mutation in a chemokine receptor.
