Chancroid results from Haemophilus ducreyi, a gram-negative Streptobacillus, and is transmitted through sexual contact. Poor hygiene may predispose males — especially those who are uncircumcised — to this disease.

This infection occurs worldwide but is particularly common in tropical countries; it affects more males than females.

Chancroid - pathophysiology

  • Trauma and abrasion allow the organism to penetrate the epidermis.
  • 3–10 days later, an erythematous, tender papule develops and progresses to a pustule.
  • The pustule ruptures after 2–3 days, leaving a shallow ulcer with a painful, necrotic base with undermined edges.
  • Single or multiple ulcers may be present

Chancroid - etiology

The most common causes of genital ulcer syndrome include syphilis, HSV, and chancroid.
