What causes High Cholesterol?
Causes: High Cholesterol: There are many myths about the causes of high cholesterol and how to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. These include the idea that cholesterol levels can be well controlled by diet and exercise. In reality, diet and exercise are only one element that can impact the balance of the components of cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), and triglycerides. Cholesterol levels are impacted by many factors. For example, for some people, there is a family tendency or hereditary component to high cholesterol levels. In addition, cholesterol is not only ingested, but also made within the body itself by the liver. For some people hereditary factors and/or their own natural production creates so much cholesterol in the body that levels may drop slightly but still remain dangerously high no matter what they eat or how much they exercise. Only a thorough evaluation by a qualified health care professional can determine the causes of high cholesterol levels in individuals.
Cholesterol levels in the body can also be impacted to various degrees by the amount of food eaten that is high in saturated and trans fats. Foods high in trans fats include those made with partially hydrogenated oils such as baked goods, doughnuts, fried foods, shortening and some margarines and dairy products. Foods high in saturated fats include those processed from animals, including beef, beef fat, veal, lamb, pork, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, milk, cheeses and other dairy products made from whole and 2 percent milk. Although fruits and vegetables are generally low in cholesterol and saturated fats, some foods from plants do contain significant amounts of saturated fat. These are the "tropical oils", such as include coconut, coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil, and cocoa butter.
