Jaundice

Primarily Unconjugated Hyperbilirubinemia


Increased production
   Hemolysis, intravascular or extravascular

   Ineffective erythropoiesis
   Hematomas, pulmonary embolus
Decreased hepatic uptake
       Gilbert's syndrome
       Drugs
          Flavaspidic acid
          Iodinated contrast agents
          Rifampin
   Decreased cystolic binding proteins (e.g., newborn or premature infants)
   Portocaval shunt
   Prolonged fasting
Decreased glucuronidation
   Crigler-Najjar syndrome, types I and II
   Gilbert's syndrome
   Physiologic jaundice of newborn
   Breast-milk jaundice
   Hepatic parenchymal disease
   Noncirrhotic portal fibrosis
