What is Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy?
- Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy: A rare disorder involving swelling of nerve roots and destruction of the protective layer around nerves. Severe symptoms can take up to a year or more to develop.
- Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy: A slowly progressive autoimmune demyelinating disease of peripheral nerves and nerve roots. Clinical manifestations include weakness and sensory loss in the extremities and enlargement of peripheral nerves. The course may be relapsing-remitting or demonstrate a step-wise progression. Protein is usually elevated in the spinal fluid and cranial nerves are typically spared. GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME features a relatively rapid progression of disease which distinguishes it from this condition. (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p1337)

Prognosis of Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy:
The
course of CIDP varies widely among individuals. Some may have a bout of
CIDP followed by spontaneous recovery, while others may have many bouts
with partial recovery in between relapses.
The disease is a treatable
cause of acquired neuropathy and initiation of early treatment to prevent
loss of nerve cells is recommended. However, some individuals are left
with some residual numbness or weakness.
