Glossary for Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy

  • Ciclosporin - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Ciclosporin (an immunosuppressant drug) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Demyelinating disorder: Any condition that is characterised by the destruction of the myelin sheaths of the nerves
  • Demyelination: is a destructive process of removal of myelin
  • Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: Diabetic nerve damage affecting toes, feet, and sometimes hands.
  • Fasciculations: A condition which is characterized by involuntary muscular contractions visible under the skin.
  • Finger numbness: Loss of feeling or sensation
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Rare autoimmune disorder destroying nerve function lead to weakness and paralysis.
  • Leg weakness: Muscle weakness of the leg
  • Muscle aches: Aches affecting one or more muscles
  • Orthostatic hypotension: Sudden low blood pressure when a person stands up or changes posture.
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Polio: Dangerous virus now rare due to vaccination.
  • Polyradiculoneuropathy: An inflammatory disorder that affects the peripheral nerves and the spinal nerve roots. The onset and progression of the disease is variable with severe cases resulting in premature death. The condition is chronic and progressive but periodic relapses can occur.
  • Reflex symptoms: Changes to the nerve reflexes
  • Tingling fingers: Finger tingling, prickling or pins-and-needles sensations
