Article Excerpts about Chronic myeloid leukemia

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a cancer of blood cells, characterized by replacement of the bone marrow with malignant, leukemic cells. Many of these leukemic cells can be found circulating in the blood and can cause enlargement of the spleen, liver, and other organs. (Source: Genes and Disease by the National Center for Biotechnology)

Definitions of Chronic myeloid leukemia:

The most common chronic myeloproliferative disorder characterized by neutrophilic leukocytosis. It is associated with the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome and/or the BCR/ABL fusion gene. Most patients are middle-aged or elderly. Common findings at presentation include fatigue, weight loss, anemia, night sweats, and splenomegaly. The disease is bi- or triphasic: an initial indolent chronic phase is followed by accelerated or blast phase. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is currently the only curative therapy (adapted from WHO 2001). -- 2003 - (Source - Diseases Database)

Chronic myeloid leukemia is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Chronic myeloid leukemia, or a subtype of Chronic myeloid leukemia, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Chronic myeloid leukemia as a "rare disease".
