Glossary for Classic migraine

  • Aura: A sensation that precedes and marks the onset of a neurological condition
  • Basilar artery migraine: Basilar migraine (BM), also known as Bickerstaff syndrome, consists of headache accompanied by dizziness, ataxia, tinnitus, decreased hearing, nausea and vomiting, dysarthria, diplopia, loss of balance, bilateral paresthesias or paresis, altered consciousness, syncope, and sometimes loss of consciousness.
  • Blind spot: Loss of vision in a particular area
  • Cadasil: A rare inherited condition which affects the small blood vessels of the brain. Damage to the vessels causes strokes and other problems.
  • Cluster headache: Headache that occurs periodically, with active periods interrupted by spontaneous remissions.
  • Common migraine: Migraine headaches are recurrent headaches that may be unilateral or bilateral. Migraine headaches may occur with or without a prodrome. The aura of a migraine may consist of neurologic symptoms, such as dizziness, tinnitus, scotomas, photophobia, or visual scintillations (eg, bright zigzag lines).
  • Dizziness: Feelings of lightheadedness or giddiness.
  • Epilepsy, familial temporal lobe, 4: A rare inherited epilepsy disorder which also involves migraines and visual aura.
  • Flashes: Seeing small flashes of light
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Hemianopsia: A condition which is characterized by the loss of vision in one half of the visual field
  • Migraine: Chronic recurring headaches with or without a preceding aura.
  • Migraine with aura, susceptibility to, 9: A form of migraine caused by a genetic defect on chromosome 5q21. Physical activity can exacerbate symptoms. The headaches can last between 4 hours and 3 days.
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Photophobia: An exaggerated or irrational fear of light.
  • Scotoma: A condition which is characterized by an area of depressed vision in the visual field.
  • Tension headache: Tension-type headaches can be episodic or chronic.Episodic tension-type headaches are defined as tension-type headaches occurring fewer than 15 days a month, whereas chronic tension headaches occur 15 days or more a month for at least 6 months. Tension-type headaches can last from minutes to days, months or even years, though a typical tension headache lasts 4-6 hours.
  • Tinnitus: Hearing noises in the ears: ringing, roaring, clicks, whistling, or hissing.
  • Vision changes: Any change in vision or sight.
  • Weakness: Symptoms causing weakness of the body
