Prevalence and Incidence of Congenital syphilis

Congenital syphilis: Rare Disease

Congenital syphilis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Congenital syphilis, or a subtype of Congenital syphilis, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Congenital syphilis Prevalence: Book Excerpts

Incidence (annual) of Congenital syphilis:

556 annual cases notified in USA 1999 (MMWR 1999) ... see also overview of Congenital syphilis.

Incidence Rate:

approx 1 in 489,208 or 0.00% or 556 people in USA [Source statistic for calcuation: "556 annual cases notified in USA 1999 (MMWR 1999)" -- see also general information about data sources]

Incidence extrapolations for USA for Congenital syphilis:

    Syphilis: Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))

Infection from the spirochete Treponema pallidum causes syphilis. Transmission occurs primarily through sexual contact during the primary, secondary, and early latent stages of infection. Prenatal transmission from an infected mother to her fetus is also possible. (See Prenatal syphilis.)

Incidence is highest in people ages 20 to 29.

    Syphilis: Syphilis - epidemiology
    (The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)

    • Congenital syphilis is transmitted from an infected mother to her unborn or newborn baby.
    • Acquired syphilis is sexually transmitted from an infected to an uninfected individual.
    • Infection transmitted to the fetus at any stage of disease; during primary and secondary syphilis, rate of transmission is 60–100%
    • Nasal secretions are highly infectious in congenital syphilis, and open, moist skin lesions are infectious in congenital and acquired syphilis.

    Congenital Infections: Epidemiology
    (Pediatric Infectious Disease)

CMV is the most common congenital infection, affecting 1% to 2% of all newborns. The rate of infection in a fetus of a mother with primary infection is between 40% and 50%; the rate of infection is less than 1% if the mother has reactivated infection. Most infected infants (90%) are asymptomatic at birth; only 10% of these children have long-term sequelae. The most common sequela is asymptomatic congenital CMV infection sensorineural hearing loss. This hearing loss can be progressive and may be unilateral or bilateral.

    About prevalence and incidence statistics:

The term 'prevalence' of Congenital syphilis usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Congenital syphilis at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Congenital syphilis refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Congenital syphilis diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.
