Article Excerpts about CREST syndrome
An acronym for a collection of
symptoms that occur to some degree in all people with systemic
sclerosis. The symptoms are Calcinosis, Raynaud's
phenomenon, Esophageal dysfunction, Sclerodactyly, and
Telangiectasia. Because of the predominance of CREST symptoms in
people with limited systemic sclerosis, some people use the term CREST
syndrome when referring to that form of the disease. (Source: excerpt from Handout on Health Scleroderma: NIAMS)
Definitions of CREST syndrome:
A mild form of LIMITED SCLERODERMA, a multi-system disorder. Its features include symptoms of CALCINOSIS; RAYNAUD DISEASE; ESOPHAGEAL MOTILITY DISORDERS; sclerodactyly, and TELANGIECTASIS. When the defect in esophageal function is not prominent, it is known as CRST syndrome.

CREST syndrome is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that CREST syndrome, or a subtype of CREST syndrome,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
