Glossary for Cyclic vomiting syndrome

  • Amitriptyline - Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to Amitriptyline during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Dehydration: Loss of fluids in the body
  • Dental caries: A destructive process causing decalcification of the tooth enamel leading to cavitation of the tooth
  • Drowsiness: Excessive tiredness or sleepiness
  • Electrolyte imbalance: impairment in the level of electrolytes in the body
  • Excitement: The sensation of increased anxiety and anticipation
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Repeated reflux of stomach acid into the throat.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux: Is referred to as the reflux of contents of the duodenum and stomach into the oesophagus
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Internal bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Headache-free migraine: A syndrome with no headache but other migraine-like symptoms
  • Hematemesis: A condition which is characterized by the vomiting of blood
  • Lactic Acidosis: Acidic blood (acidosis) due to buildup of lactate
  • Mallory-Weiss syndrome: A laceration of the lining of the gastroesophageal junction or just above it - often caused by severe vomiting.
  • Menstruation: The passage of blood and uterine tissue through the vagina cyclically
  • Migraine: Chronic recurring headaches with or without a preceding aura.
  • Miscarriage: Loss of fetus without human interference
  • Motion sickness: Nausea from any type of motion or travel
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Paleness: Whitening or pallor of the skin
  • Poor appetite: Loss or reduction in appetite for food
  • Prostration: Extreme exhaustion and fatigue.
  • Retching: The act of trying to vomit without the expulsion of vomitus
  • Stress: Emotional stress (sometimes refers to physical stress)
  • Swallowing difficulty: Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
