Glossary for Cysticercosis

  • Alveolar Hydatid Disease: Rare multi-organ tapeworm infection caught from animals.
  • Alveolar echinococcosis: A rare parasitic infection caused by the larva of a miniscule tapeworm called Echinococcus multilocularis. Transmission occurs through contact with foxes, coyotes, dogs and cats. The condition results in the development of parasitic tumors in the liver (sometimes other organs such as brain and lungs) but it generally causes no symptom for 5 to 15 years after infection.
  • Blurred vision: Blurriness of vision or images.
  • Cysticercosis: An infectious disease caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium. If the larvae are ingested then a mild or asymptomatic tapeworm infection occurs. However, ingested eggs pass into the bloodstream where they can then enter various tissues and form the cysts that characterize cysticercosis.
  • Diseases contagious from contaminated water: Diseases that can be contracted from contaminated water
  • Diseases contagious from food: Diseases that can be contracted from food
  • Diseases contagious from pigs: Diseases that can be contracted from pigs
  • Loiasis: A parasitic worm (Loa Loa) which is transmitted through a bit by the horsefly, deer fly or the Mango fly. The skin and eyes are usually affected. The worm larvae enter the blood stream through a bite by an infected fly. The adult worms move through the skin, eyes or other organs often causing a localized inflammation. Central Africa is the main area affected. Symptoms may take up to one and a half decades to occur and serious complications can occur depending on where the adult worm travels to within the body.
  • Myositis: One of the underlying causes for muscle weakness/myopathy.
  • Neurocysticercosis: Brain/CNS infection with the tapeworm Cysticercosis
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pork tapeworm: A tapeworm infection that is caused from pork
  • River Blindness: Skin and eye infection caused by the helminth (worm) 'Onchocerca volvulus', transmitted via fly bites and usually seen only in parts of Africa, the Middle East and South America
  • Skin bumps: Bumps or lumps on the skin.
  • Taeniasis: An infection with a type of tapeworm
  • Worm conditions: Any condition that is caused by infestation of worms
