Glossary for Dandruff

  • Atopic dermatitis: Skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation, and pruritis. Often hereditary and associated with allergic rhinitis and asthma.
  • Blepharitis: A common eyelid inflammation
  • Contact dermatitis: Skin reaction to an irritant
  • Cradle Cap: Common scalp condition in babies
  • Dermatitis: General name for any type of skin inflammation.
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus: Form of lupus affecting the skin.
  • Dry scalp: A condition which is characterized by a dry texture to ones scalp
  • Eczema: Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by skin inflammation and irritation. The severity of extent of the condition is highly variable. It may be caused by allergies, irritants or other factors such as stress.
  • Exfoliative dermatitis: Form of dermatitis where skin flakes or falls off.
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Flaky scalp:
  • Fowler-Christmas-Chapple syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized by the association of polycystic ovaries with the abnormal functioning of the urinary valve.
  • Hair conditions: Any disorder the affects the hair
  • Hand-Schüller-Christian Syndrome: A group of blood disorder involving excess production of histiocytes (type of immune cell) throughout the body. Accumulation of histiocytes results in non-cancerous growths which can damage organs and other body tissues such as bones. Symptom vary hugely and depend on location and size of tumor growths.
  • Hypomelanotic disorder: Lack of pigmentation
  • ICF syndrome: A very rare, recessively inherited syndrome characterized mainly by a weak immune system and facial anomalies.
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Intertrigo: Skin inflammation from rubbing together of two skin areas
  • Itchy scalp: Itching of the scalp
  • Lice: A parasitic insect that can infect humans
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Nerve symptoms: Symptoms affecting the nerves
  • Neurodermatitis: Lichen simplex chronicus refers to thickened itchy skin that results from persistently rubbing or scratching an area of skin.
  • Parkinson's Disease: Degenerative brain condition characterised by tremor.
  • Pediculosis: Lice infestation of the body
  • Pityriasis Rosea: Skin inflammation
  • Pityriasis Versicolor: Fungal skin infection
  • Polycystic ovaries urethral sphincter dysfunction: A rare syndrome characterized by the association of polycystic ovaries with the abnormal functioning of the urinary valve.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that affects approximately 5% of all women.
  • Polydactyly alopecia seborrheic dermatitis: A very rare disorder characterized by the association of extra digits, alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Psoriasis: Chronic skin rash condition, usually red or silver and blistery.
  • Rosacea: Inflammatory rash affecting cheeks, nose, forehead, chin
  • Scalp psoriasis: Scalp psoriasis can be very mild, with slight, fine scaling. It can also be very severe with thick, crusted plaques covering the entire scalp, which commonly can cause hair loss.
  • Scalp symptoms: Symptoms of the scalp on the head
  • Sick: Feeling ill or off color
  • Stress: Emotional stress (sometimes refers to physical stress)
  • Tinea capitis: A condition which is characterized by tinea of the scalp
  • Tinea corporis: A condition which is characterized by tinea of glabrous skin
  • Tinea cruris: Red, scaly rash in groin and upper thigh area; usually found in men and due to fungal infection
  • Tinea versicolor: A condition which is characterized by a chronic noninflammatory multiple macular patches
  • Vitamin B deficiency: When there is a deficiency of vitamin B in the body
