Racial Information for Death: Heart disease and cancer are the major killers among women of color, as they are among the rest of the population. African-American women experience high rates of death from HIV/AIDS, homicide and unintentional injuries. For Hispanic women, additional prominent causes of death are HIV/AIDS, especially among Puerto Rican women, and homicide and unintentional injuries. Homicide and unintentional injuries are also common causes of death for American Indian/ Alaska Native women, as well as alcohol-related diseases. Inheritance of Death refers to whether the condition is inherited from your parents or "runs" in families. The level of inheritance of a condition depends on how important genetics are to the disease. Strongly genetic diseases are usually inherited, partially genetic diseases are sometimes inherited, and non-genetic diseases are not inherited. For general information, see Introduction to Genetics.
