Type 2 diabetes Genetics: Book Excerpts

Racial Patterns for Type 2 diabetes:

Racial Information for Type 2 diabetes: Type II, or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, affects about 16 million American people. Among African American women, this form of diabetes has reached epidemic proportions; age 20 years or older, the rate is 11.8%. About 1 in 4 black women over the age of 55 years of age has diabetes, nearly twice the rate of white women. (Source: excerpt from DIABETES AND AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN: NWHIC)

About inheritance and genetics:

Inheritance of Type 2 diabetes refers to whether the condition is inherited from your parents or "runs" in families. The level of inheritance of a condition depends on how important genetics are to the disease. Strongly genetic diseases are usually inherited, partially genetic diseases are sometimes inherited, and non-genetic diseases are not inherited. For general information, see Introduction to Genetics.
