Rota virus vaccine has FDA approval: The FDA has recently approved the rotavirus vaccine to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis in children. Rotavirus infection is the leading cause of gastroenteritis in infants world wide resulting in diarrhea, dehydration and even death in some cases. The vaccine is an oral live attenuated human rotavirus which offers protection against the most common type of circulating rotavirus and is given in a 2 dose series. The U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the child completes the immunization by 6 months of age. Clinical trials show that the protection offered by the vaccine is sustained and broad through the first two years of life.The vaccine is also efficacious across ethnic groups. The commonly encountered adverse effects included irritability, running nose, fever, cough, loss of appetite and vomiting. It has been contraindicated in children with uncorrected congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract.
