Cure Research for Down Syndrome

Cure Research list for Down Syndrome:

The list of research areas and treatments under analysis mentioned in various sources for Down Syndrome includes:

Medical Research Breakthroughs and Down Syndrome

Hope for Down syndrome: Researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine were able to improve the cognition skills of mice suffering from Down’s syndrome using a new dosing schedule of an old drug- PTZ. The mice were given 17 daily doses of the therapy following which they were able to recognize objects and navigate mazes with the same dexterity as healthy mice. However researchers still claim that considerable amount of work is still to be done as high doses of the drug concentration in humans is known to cause seizures. But the research does provide hope for patients suffering from Down’s syndrome. Experts believe that Down syndrome occurs due to the excess presence of the neuro transmitter called gamma amino butyric acid ( GABA) and the drug PTZ is said to block GABA.

Cure Research discussion for Down Syndrome:

Pursuing another avenue, researchers at NIA are looking at Down's syndrome because it shares some traits with AD. Down's syndrome is caused by a birth defect in which the person has three, rather than the normal two, copies of chromosome 21. Down's syndrome is associated with mental retardation and the development of AD pathology. Because the gene for APP has been mapped to chromosome 21, some researchers believe that Down's syndrome is related to the "overexpression" of APP.
