Glossary for Dracunculiasis

  • Arterial insufficiency: When amount of blood flowing through an artery is insufficient to meet the needs of the tissue.
  • Cutaneous larva migrans: A condition due to prolonged migration of nematode larvae in the skin
  • Diseases contagious from contaminated water: Diseases that can be contracted from contaminated water
  • Eosinophilia: This is when there is an abnormal increase in the eosinophils in the blood
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Gnathostoma hispidum infection: A tapeworm infection with a tapeworm species called Gnathostoma hispidum. The infection is called gnathostomiasis and usually results from eating undercooked contaminated fish or poultry or drinking contaminated water. The nature and severity of symptoms vary depending on which part of the body the tapeworms migrate through (usually the skin).
  • Local swelling: The localized swelling of a body part
  • Loiasis: A parasitic worm (Loa Loa) which is transmitted through a bit by the horsefly, deer fly or the Mango fly. The skin and eyes are usually affected. The worm larvae enter the blood stream through a bite by an infected fly. The adult worms move through the skin, eyes or other organs often causing a localized inflammation. Central Africa is the main area affected. Symptoms may take up to one and a half decades to occur and serious complications can occur depending on where the adult worm travels to within the body.
  • Myiasis: A condition that is characterised by the invasion of the body by the larvae of flies
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Pyoderma Gangrenosum: A rare inflammatory skin disorder characterized by small red bumps or blisters which eventually become ulcerated.
  • Ulcer: A local defect in the mucosa
  • Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
  • Venous Insufficiency: A condition where the valves in the leg veins are unable to pump blood to the heart which causes blood to pool below the defective valves.
  • Worm conditions: Any condition that is caused by infestation of worms
