Glossary for Dysentery

  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Amebiasis: An intestinal infection caused by a parasitic amebic organism. It is usually associated with poor sanitation.
  • Amebic dysentery: Ameba-caused bacterial bowel infection and ulceration.
  • Amoebiasis: An infectious disease caused by a free-living amoebic parasite called Entamoeba histolytica. The organism infects the bowel and causes gastroenteritis. Infection occurs through ingesting contaminated food or water. It is more common in countries with poor sanitation. The incubation period may last from days to weeks before symptoms appear.
  • Bacterial digestive infections: Bacterial infections affecting the gastrointestinal
  • Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
  • Balantidiasis: Intestinal infection with a parasitic protozoa (Balantidium coli) resulting in intestinal inflammation. It is usually transmitted through direct or indirect contact with pig fecal matter.
  • Bloody stool: Blood appearing in the stool.
  • Bowel conditions: Medical conditions that affect the bowels
  • Bowel problems: Symptoms affecting the bowel
  • Campylobacter food poisoning: Common bacterial infection usually from chicken.
  • Cholera: An acute bacterial disease transmitted through food or water contaminated with human faeces. The intestinal infection is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

  • Colon conditions: Any condition affecting the colon
  • Crohn's disease: Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the digestive system. It is one of a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel disease. The disease can affect any area from the mouth to the anus. It often affects the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.

  • Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.

  • Dysentery: A general term for various bacterial digestive disorders.
  • Helminth infections: The infection by a parasitic worm
  • Infectious Diarrhea: Infectious digestive infections causing diarrhea.
  • Intestinal Conditions: Conditions that affect the intestines
  • Intestinal bleeding: A condition characterized by the bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Loperamide - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Loperamide during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Mucus in stool: The occurrence of mucus in ones stool
  • Norwalk-like viruses: Several shellfish or oyster-associated gastro-causing viruses related to Norwalk or caliciviruses.
  • Reiter’s syndrome: A form of reactive arthritis characterized by arthritis, urethritis, conjunctivitis and skin lesions.
  • Salmonella food poisoning: Common type of food poisoning.
  • Schistosomiasis: Parasitic fluke infection in developing countries
  • Scurvy: Severe disease from vitamin C deficiency
  • Shigella boydii: A form of bacterium
  • Shigella flexneri: A form of bacterium
  • Shigella sonnei: A form of bacterium
  • Shigellosis: An infectious disease which affects the intestinal tract and is caused by the Shigella bacteria. The condition may be severe, especially in children, but may be asymptomatic in some cases. The disease can be transmitted through fecal-oral contact.
  • Sudden Digestive Conditions: Various forms of sudden acute digestive upset.
  • Tenesmus: feeling of incomplete evacuation of bowel
  • Ulcerative colitis: Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.
  • Viral dysentery: Contagious epidemic viral form of dysentery.
  • Viral gastroenteritis: Virus causing gastroenteritis of digestive tract.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Any diseases that is transmitted through some waterborne agent
  • Yersiniosis: A condition which is characterized by infectious diarrhea, enteritis, ileitis and occasionally septicaemia
