Hoarseness is an important symptom of laryngeal disease. In hoarseness the diagnosis is usually obvious from the history alone. Carcinoma of the larynx must be excluded if hoarseness persists for more than 3 weeks in an adult patient. The history and duration of the voice change and associated general symptoms such as cough and weight loss must be looked into. Some of the serious disorders that are not to be missed are cancer larynx, croup, foreign body and myasthenia gravis. Sometimes hypothyroidism may present with features of hoarseness of voice.
