Medical Research Breakthroughs and Ear infection

Benefits of telemedicine: When a child is sick or injured, the first place a worried parent goes is the Emergency Room. But a new study finds many of these visits are unnecessary and could be replaced digitally -- saving us all time and money. A new study finds 28 percent of the time, a trip to the emergency room for a child could be replaced by an Internet doctor's visit. The study also reports telemedicine is not only more convenient, but is more cost-effective than regular hospital visits. Using telemedicine, medical information is transferred via telephone, the Internet or other networks. Patients can consult with nurses or doctors and sometimes physical examinations can be performed. The study was led by a team from the University of Rochester Medical Center that directs Health-e-Access, a Rochester-based telemedicine program. Researchers analyzed data from 2006, tracking all paediatric visits to the largest emergency department in the city. The 22,000 visits were then coded by categories. These categories included ailments that are always treatable by telemedicine -- such as ear infections and sore throats -- problems that usually can be treated by telemedicine -- such as asthma attacks -- and finally, conditions that were too serious to be treated by telemedicine. Study authors report nearly 28 percent of the visits fell into the first category. They say if these visits would have been treated by telemedicine, the emergency department would have had 12,000 fewer visits that year. There has been a concern that telemedicine would cost more because patients would use it more often. But authors say this study proves otherwise. Researchers looked at two groups identical groups of children -- one group had access to telemedicine in addition to the emergency department and family doctor, the others did not have telemedicine access. Researchers found the group that had access to telemedicine used the service 23 percent more often, but because telemedicine is less expensive, that group ultimately cost less over the course of a year.
