Medical Research Breakthroughs and Epilepsy

Bone loss in young women using Epileptic drug: According to a study published in a medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology young women who took phenytoin , the commonly used epilepsy drug for one year showed significant bone loss compared to women taking other epilepsy drugs. During the study researchers tested the bone health of 93 women with epilepsy between the ages of 18 and 40 and were using epilepsy drugs phenytoin, carbamazepine, lamotrigine or valproate. Bone mineral density was measured at the spine and two areas of the hip, (the femoral neck and total hip) at the beginning of the study and one year later. Each woman's nutrition and physical activity, along with other factors that affect bone health were also evaluated. The study found women taking phenytoin for one year lost 2.6 percent of the bone density in the femoral neck of the hip. Women taking the other epilepsy drugs did not lose any bone density in the femoral neck. There was no bone loss at the spine or the total hip in any group. This significant amount of bone loss caused serious concerns about the long-term effects of taking phenytoin in young women with epilepsy. This is one of the first prospective studies to examine the long-term effects of common epilepsy drugs on rates of bone loss in young women. If this amount of bone loss, continues over the long term, could put these women at increased risk of fractures after menopause. Femoral neck fractures are tied to a higher risk of death in elderly people.

Genes and Disease by the National Center for Biotechnology (Excerpt)

Much progress has been made in narrowing down regions of chromosomes associated with different forms of epilepsy. With this effort, scientists continue to expand the list of genes involved in seizure disorders. Animal models of epilepsy also contribute to our understanding of electrical brain disturbances. By focussing on the genetic basis for epilepsy, scientists hope to develop more effective anticonvulsive treatments and, possibly, gene replacement therapies for seizure disorders such as LaFora Disease. top link (Source: Genes and Disease by the National Center for Biotechnology)

Scientists are studying potential antiepileptic drugs with goal of enhancing treatment for epilepsy. Scientists continue to study how neurotransmitters interact with brain cells to control nerve firing and how non-neuronal cells in the brain contribute to seizures. One of the most-studied neurotransmitters is GABA, or gamma-aninobutryic acid. Researchers are working to identify genes that may influence epilepsy. This information may allow doctors to prevent epilepsy or to predict which treatments will be most beneficial. Doctors are now experimenting with several new types of therapies for epilepsy, including transplanting fetal pig neurons into the brains of patients to learn whether cell transplants can help control seizures, transplanting stem cells, and using a device that could predict seizures up to 3 minutes before they begin. Researchers are continually improving MRI and other brain scans. Studies have show that in some case, children may experience fewer seizures if they maintain a strict diet - called the ketogenic diet - rich in fats and low in carbohydrates.
