Glossary for Erysipelas

  • Abrasion: An area of skin or mucous membrane that has been scraped
  • Angioedema: Severe and dangerous form of hives with swelling
  • Arm rash: An eruption on the skin of the arm.
  • Blisters: Blistering of the skin.
  • Cellulitis: Inflammation of skin or subcutaneous tissues.
  • Contact dermatitis: Skin reaction to an irritant
  • Eczema: Eczema is a chronic skin condition characterized by skin inflammation and irritation. The severity of extent of the condition is highly variable. It may be caused by allergies, irritants or other factors such as stress.
  • Edematous rash: skin infection typically caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, although other streptococcal groups are occasionally causative agents.
  • Erysipeloid: A dermatitis or cellulitis of the hand and fingers
  • Face rash: A rash of the skin that occurs on the face
  • Gangrene: Tissue death
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Insect bites:
  • Leg rash: Any rash on the legs or feet
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Lymphangiectasies and lymphedema Hennekam type: A rare disorder characterized by buildup of lymphatic fluid in the limbs, face and genitals, seizures and mental and growth retardation.
  • Lymphatic Obstruction: A blockage of the lymph vessels that drain fluid from body tissues and facilitate immune system cell movement through the body. Lymphatic obstruction can be caused by such things as tumors, surgery, injury and infection. Obstruction can be primary (as in the case of inherited conditions such as lymphatic hypoplasia) or secondary (as in the case of infection).
  • Necrotizing fasciitis: A severe, progressive skin infection which causes progressive destruction of skin and underlying tissue. It is caused by certain bacteria and has a high mortality rate.
  • Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
  • Scarlet fever: A complication of infection from strep bacteria such as strep throat.
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Streptococcal Infections: Various "strep" bacterial infections.
